Has anyone here routinely drive across railroad tracks and thought that they can beat the train? Has anyone here ever trespassed on railroad tracks? I'll admit that I have, but I was still a cub back then (XD) and didn't know better at 7 years old. The thing is that it is a stupid thing to do, and many people have been hit and killed by trying to shave a few seconds off of their travel time. A standard 8-Car Amtrak passenger train traveling at 79 MPH can take up to 6000 feet, or 1 1/8 of a mile to come to a full and complete stop, and a standard 150-car freight train traveling at 50 MPH can take up to 8000 feet, or 1 1/2 miles to come to a full complete stop. The most it would take is about a minute for an 8 car train to clear the crossing. It's better to lose a minute of your life than to lose your life in a minute. The gate means wait!

How can you go across if the gates are closed? I've ran across when the yellow warning lights are flashing right before they close.

I can't say that I have. However, back when I lived in Tamaqua, we had a few railroad tracks and frequent trains come in and out. hehe. ^^ When I was a cub, I use to love walk down the steep hill just to watch the trains go by. I often stand close to the passing trains but nowadays, they aren't so thrilling that they use to be since I'm older. ^^

Many people go around the gates because in the US they only cover about half of the road and most of the time don't even cover the sidewalk. Stupid people. I rode Amtrak just this past weekend and saw some idiots riding BMX bikes right on the tracks, and I also saw some people run across the tracks when the gate was down and this fat woman trips on the rail! I was laughing my a** off! BTW: This is my 50th Post!

I voted yes, actually on both counts.....I've run the track before. But, as a kid, I've trespassed and used to put stuff on the tracks to "smush".

If you are in the USA, if you are on the railroad right-of-way, which is the spot where the trains operate, yo are considered trespassing and are subject to citation and a minimum fine of $271 in CA.
