The original is my favorite, without a doubt. It's basically a masterpiece. TLK is not the world's highest-grossing hand-drawn film of all time for no reason. The characters are great, the music is EXCELLENT (I'm listening to the original complete scores right now), the story is so deep and you understand more and more as you get older, it's not corny at all (unless you don't like talking animals), and the animation is very impressive. Like said in the first post, the animators studied real animals and they also chose fitting names for their characters, etc. TLK is one of the ONLY movies I would give 5/5 stars. It's original and classic. But I was impressed with the sequel. TLK II was very good for a sequel, a DISNEY sequel at that. The animation was not atrocious, the story was really good, the new characters were likeable, and the songs pulled off. I can see why some people prefer TLK II (and not just because of Kovu, LOL). However, I didn't like 1 1/2. It was informative but unnecessary, and also starred some of my...least favorite characters. *bricked* There were some good moments. My top 5 are....aah, I'll just do my whole chain. Zira > Shenzi > Scar > Mufasa > Rafiki > Nala > Zazu > Sarabi >> Vitani > Kovu > Simba >>> Pumbaa > Timon > Kiara > Banzai >>> Ed >>> Nuka. I'll admit to loving Zazu *hides from Knarrly*, and Timon and Pumbaa were pretty funny in the first movie, but they annoyed me in the sequel.
